Birds

Birds are very important for the life and functioning of the forest.

During our walks in the forest, we mainly hear birds, sometimes we manage to see them.

The sound of their voices (songs) and flights make a visit to the forest have a special character for us humans, it relaxes, unwinds, allows us to regenerate our strength.

However, we cannot immediately see how important birds are in the life and functioning of the forest.

The forest is trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, mushrooms and other organisms.

Insects living in the forest feed on them.

Balancing the number of insects in the forest is the main or one of the most important tasks that birds perform in the forest.

Especially during the nesting period, birds intensively search for insects and eat them in large quantities.

Foresters know about this very positive effect on forests. That is why they willingly hang nesting boxes for them on trees.

Birds intensively search for insects on leaves, tree bark, in forest litter and soil.

The method of catching insects varies depending on the species of birds.

For example, woodpeckers search for insects in the bark, under the bark or in the wood of trees, and sometimes look for insects directly on the soil or in it.

Tits, on the other hand, feed slightly differently, searching through shoots and leaves of trees, tree bark, forest floor and soil.

Another role that birds play in the forest is the dispersal of plants.

Birds often feed on the seeds of plants, e.g. trees and shrubs, which is why some of them contribute to the dispersal of plants.

Other birds feed on rodents, regulating their numbers in the forest. Some small rodents can damage seedlings in young forest plantations.

Another role is played by birds that feed on dead animal organisms, in this way removing them from the forest, thus taking care of the sanitary condition of the forest. Species that play this role include, for example, corvid birds such as crows and ravens.

Birds therefore play an important regulatory role in the functioning of forests. They participate in the process of turnover of matter and energy that constantly takes place in the forest.

For us, people, birds are a source of beautiful songs and sounds that resound in the forest and have a very positive effect on our health.

Bird flights in the forest are a source of many emotions for us, people, often accompanied by true admiration for the incredible skills of many species of birds.
